How To Do Employment Screening Right: NAPBS Update

Four GoodHire envoys traveled to the annual conference of The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) last month to gather the latest insight into industry best practices.

The two-day conference, which took place in Austin, TX, is the one to attend for anyone in the background screening industry. Experts share information about changes to relevant laws, how to mitigate FCRA litigation risk, cybersecurity, and other screening topics.

GoodHire’s VP of Product Management, Max Wesman, attended the conference along with FCRA Compliance Analyst Izzy McLean (pictured), Matt Muller, who leads the team dedicated to privacy and compliance, and Geoff Lee, GoodHire’s Director of Data Acquisition. All the insight they gathered will be incorporated into GoodHire services and practices.

Advancing the Compliance Commitment

While at the conference, Izzy McLean earned the FCRA Advanced Certification credential by passing an exam that demonstrates her expertise in the most important provisions of the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The NAPBS FCRA Advanced Certification exam is specifically targeted to compliance issues trending in the industry, such as responding properly to consumer file requests and using strict procedures to ensure that reported information is current and complete.

“My certification symbolizes GoodHire’s desire to be as fair, accurate, and transparent as possible, and to provide its customers access to a well-trained and knowledgeable compliance department,” McLean said. “By sponsoring me for the exam, GoodHire makes the statement that we care about more than the bottom-line; we want to make sure we’re creating the most accurate reports in the most compliant fashion.”

In other words, McLean helps keep GoodHire up-to-date so you are up-to-date.

3 Takeaways from NAPBS

There is much to digest from the conference. Here are three things that stand out:

  • Background checks are a hot topic at the national, state, and local levels. Headlines related to safety in the on-demand economy and some high-profile court cases like the Whole Foods class action keep the issue top of mind for lawmakers and their constituents, and there’s a growing expectation that all employers will screen job applicants to protect their customers.
  • Compliance remains a key issue when it comes to employment screening, and attorneys are watching closely for opportunities to bring lawsuits for noncompliance issues. Consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) must keep up with FCRA and state laws in order to protect the employers that use their services. That’s one reason why GoodHire staff regularly attend industry conferences and pursue accreditation and certifications.
  • Employment screening doesn’t have to be scary, despite the attention it’s getting from lawmakers and lawyers. The greatest compliance risks, like disclosure and the adverse action process, are actually the least difficult to mitigate.
